Axis B – Spatiality methodologies


ESPACE’s methodological research theme B concentrates the large spectrum of studies made and under development in the field of spatial analysis and geodata processing in the laboratory with a library of methodologies applied, innovative experiments, and critically tested on the different domains of applications of geography and territorial planning. The interdisciplinary development of geographic geodata processing chains and covers several complementary specialties from the advanced geocoded data analysis techniques to the support of decision-making for stakeholders and territorial planning. The objectives of the theme B concerns not only the critical use of the existing methods and tools, but also the combination and creation of new methods, dedicated to spatial analysis, which can be inspired by other disciplines. The notion of “spatiality’s” can take various forms: observations, measurement of the analyzed geographic objects, spatial or spatially organized information, land uses, land covers, perception and appropriation of space, data acquisition and decision-making process on the geographic space.

Four teams compose this area of research:

  • ROSAM (B1) – assessment of the relevance and use of statistical and spatial observation reference systems in spatial planning
  • CHANGE (B2) – understanding changes in territories, dynamics of spatial change and potential for change
  • ASBIG (B3) – spatial analysis based on geographical imagery and merging methods
  • DAMIA (B4) – modeling, geosimulation, geovisualization, massive and collaborative geographic data by artificial intelligence.

ESPACE’s methodological research theme B works autonomously in the production of methods, and with the other two domains of research (A) and (B) in the application and experimentations of the methodologies.
